The institution is located at Indore in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. Indian Council of Agricultural Research established NRCS during the year 1987 for the needed centralised research to support soybean production systems research with basic technology and breeding material. Coordinating unit of All India Coordinated Research Project on Soybean (AICRPS), Soybean Breeder Seed Production (BSPS) and National Active Collection Site (NACS) for soybean germplasm are also located at National Research Centre for Soybean.
The site of the institution at Indore (M.P.) is located in the village Piplyarao of district Indore, which lies in Vidhyanchal range of Malwa Plateau at 22o 4'37"N latitude and 75o 52'7"E longitude placed at an altitude of 540 meter above the mean sea level. NRCS is at a distance of 4 km from Indore city and 6 km from Railway station. The research Centre is spread over an area of 55.2 hectare.
